Yin yoga

A soft, restful practice that releases tension, settles the mind and helps you sleep.

In detail

Three minutes in one pose

  • Poses of 2–5 minutes
  • No effort, no load
  • Closer to meditation

A pose is held for two to five minutes, with no effort and no reaching for anything. In that time the turn comes round to connective tissue — the layer a short dynamic stretch never stays long enough to touch.

The side effect turns out to be the main one: in a long hold there is nothing to occupy yourself with, and what is going on in your head becomes audible. Yin is closer to meditation than to a workout, and it is often the first place someone notices their own state.

Questions

What people ask most often

Do I need to be flexible or fit?

No special preparation is needed. The groups are small, so the teacher sees everyone and picks a version of each pose that suits your body. The practice starts from where you are today, and you move at a pace that is comfortable for you.

How is meditation different from simply lying down?

Rest takes away tiredness, but it does not change how your attention works. In meditation that is exactly what we train: noticing where the mind has gone and bringing it back. The skill stays with you outside the studio too.

What should I bring?

Comfortable clothes you do not mind sitting on the floor in. We will tell you the rest when you book, once it is clear which format you are coming to.
